Are You in Touch with all of your Friends? ~ Facebook Changes

As you most likely know, there have been a lot of changes at Facebook lately.  One of the most significant is the news feed.  It has been changed to only show updates from the friends you most recently interacted with.    I'm sure we all have friends that don't post very often but we still want to hear from them!  You may want to change your settings so that you get everyone's posts.

Here's how:
  1. go to your "News Feed" - you can get there by clicking on the word "Facebook" above your picture
  2.  Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Edit Options" in the bar below the bottom post
  3.  A box pops up with the default set to "Friends and pages you interact with most". Click on the menu arrow and select the other option "All of Your Friends and Pages"
  4.  Click "Save"
Now you'll be hearing from all of those folks you thought were not on Facebook anymore!

Creativity vs. Good Taste

"Ah, good taste, what a dreadful thing! Taste is the enemy of creativeness."
-Pablo Picasso, painter and sculptor (1881-1973)

I love this quote from Picasso.  It makes me laugh and it makes me think.  And it challenges me artistically. That he truly believed it is so obvious in his work.

I am an artist, but I am not in the same category as Picasso (in oh, so many ways!).  I make pieces that I like to think of as art, but they are made to be worn, not to sit in a museum and be discussed, admired, hated, or ignored.  I want people to like my things.  Maybe not everybody, but enough people to make it worthwhile for me to continue.  And I think these people have good taste.  In fact I’m sure they do.

Sometimes the pieces that I like the best just sit, not finding a new home for the longest time.  Usually I like them the best because they were a challenge to create; the techniques were new to me or it was the first time I got a new technique right.  Other times a favorite is just something that makes me laugh.  Occasionally, I create a piece by accident;  something goes wrong, but in the process something even better gets made.  This happens most often during the soldering and patina stages.  So the pieces sit, waiting for the person who likes them as much as I do.

Quote of the Day

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started.  The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one."  -Mark Twain

Because I need to remember this every day.

I See Spots

I'm on a roll!  Making my Treasury on Etsy was so fun that I decided to do a Collection on ArtFire.  Same principle: pick a theme and feature other people's work.  This one is spots, dots, polka dots, whatever struck my fancy.  Here are a few items from the collection I See Spots.

Super moon and Spring tides

Today is the full moon, and it is also the day that the moon is closer to the Earth than it has been in 18 years.  Tomorrow is the first day of Spring.  With the Spring full moon come the spring tides.  Along with the Autumn tides, they are some of the biggest tides of the year.  It makes me miss living by the ocean.  It's always exciting to see how high the tide will come up, and when the tide goes way, way out it is always fun to walk on the beach and see what new things are exposed by the receding waters.  I can't go to the ocean today, so I made a Treasury on Etsy of things that seem appropriate to me for this time of moon and sea and change.  A Treasury is a celebration of other people's work.  It all seems very serendipitous.

Here are some items from my new Treasury:

FULL MOON FISH Oceanica Patchwork Pillow Cover by OceanPatch on Etsy

Full Moon Cats - Print by AliceinParis on Etsy

When I was a child we lived by the beach and my cat would bring home fish and crabs in the middle of the night.  I imagine these cats are waiting for low tide to expose all the goodies in the sea.

Large Sea Shell Mosaic Sea Turtle by ShadyGroveMosaics on Etsy

There are thirteen more works in this collection by some wonderful artists.  See the rest of them here.
